1. As Night begins, Eliezer is so moved by faith that he weeps when he prays. He is also searching for a deeper understanding of the mystical teachings of the Kabbalah. How does Eliezer's relationship with his faith and with God change as the book progresses?

2. What literal and symbolic meanings does "night" have in the book?

3. Early in the book, after Moishe the Beadle escapes his execution, no one, not even Eliezer, believes his tales (p. 7). Even when the Germans arrive in Sighet and move all the Jews into ghettos, the Jewish townspeople seem to ignore or suppress their fears. "Most people thought that we would remain in the ghetto until the end of the war, until the arrival of the Red Army. Afterward everything would be as before" (p. 12). What might be the reasons for the townspeople's widespread denial of the evidence facing them?

4. Think of the kapos and the little blonde pipel who is hanged on page 64. Who are the bystanders? Who are the perpetrators? Who are the victims in Night? Do these roles sometimes overlap?

5. At the end of Night, Wiesel writes: "From the depths of the mirror, a corpse was contemplating me. The look in his eyes as he gazed at me has never left me" (p. 115). What parts of Eliezer died during his captivity? What was born in their place?

6. What scenes from Night do you remember most vividly? Have they made you look at the world or your family differently?

7. In his 1986 Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech, Wiesel says: "[O]ne person of integrity can make a difference, a difference of life and death. As long as one dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true. As long as one child is hungry, our life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the quality of our freedom depends on theirs" (p. 120). How has Elie Wiesel fulfilled this purpose with this book? How does this statement make you feel about your place in the world?

Be prepared to answer each of these questions. Have text marked to back up your opinion! You r names will be randomly drawn to answer.

Throughout the novel, Chinua Achebe provides opposites, or foils, to help the reader understand the characters’ motivation and/or the culture. Based on your reading and our discussion, explain how either
Okonkwo and Obierika are foils of one another
OR
Nwoye and Ikemefuna are foils of one another.

In your discussion, make sure you include specific details.
In chapter three, the narrator tells us that Okonkwo “was possessed by the fear of his father’s contemptible life and shameful death.” Give three examples from Okonkwo’s life which prove this statement to be true.

An Umuofian proverb states, “If a child washed his hands, he could eat with the kings.” Explain how Okonkwo has “washed his hands” of his father’s legacy.

Using Okonkwo’s relationship with Ikemefuna, Ezinma and Nwoye, define fatherhood according to the Umuofians.

Discuss three causes and three effects of the accidental shooting at the end of Part One.

Explain the significance of the title of the novel.

How does the cultural information in Part One prepare the reader for the remainder of the novel? Give at least 3 examples.

Please read over the class policies posted below!

Beginning of Class
· Class will begin at the tardy bell. Be in your seat, with materials ready, so that you will not be counted absent.
· You will receive 3 passes out of class per quarter.
Materials Needed in Class Each Day
· Textbook or paperback supplementary book
· Pen and Pencil – All work to be turned in for a grade must be done in pencil or blue or black ink.
· Notebook paper – Do not turn in paper torn from a spiral bound notebook.
· Three-ring notebook with sections for literature, vocabulary, grammar and writing.
· Two highlighters in different colors.
Homework
· Homework assignments will be both overnight and long-range.
· Much of your homework in English will be reading. In order to check reading homework, I often give quizzes or short, in-class writing related to the reading.
· ALL assignments should be turned in at the beginning of class the day they are due. Late assignments will be accepted with penalty. The grade will be lowered 20 points for each day late, including weekends and breaks. No late work will be accepted after five days.
Grades
Your quarter grade will be determined by averaging homework/class work grades, quizzes, compositions, projects and major tests. Grades will be posted on SPAN for Parent Access weekly!

Absences and Make-up Work
· The following information comes from the Wake County School Board Policy on attendance:
1. If an absence has been approved in advance and/or work is assigned by a teacher in advance, all make-up work, including tests assigned for the day of return, is due upon the student’s return to school.
2. If make-up work has not been assigned the in advance by a teacher, the student will have a maximum of ONE WEEK to submit any missed work.
3. The responsibility for securing and arranging for make-up work rests with the student at the secondary level.
I usually arrive at school by 7:00 and leave around 4:00. If you need to make up any work, please schedule an appointment at least one day in advance.

Sin and Guilt Project

The culminating project for this unit will ask you to reflect upon yourself. You need to decide what your condemning fault is. How does that fault manifest itself in your actions, your thoughts, and your relationships with other people? What is an appropriate punishment for that fault? What would your black veil or scarlet letter symbolize? How does society view your scarlet letter? Is it even seen as a bad thing? What is the reason for the societal views? How do you view your letter? How are you like Hester, like Dimmesdale, or like Chillingworth in dealing with your condemning fault?

You will write an essay reflecting upon these questions. Your essay should be honest, clear and free of grammatical errors. The length should be at least 1 and ½ pages in 12-point font.

You will also create a letter for your fault. Think critically about what it should be like. It could be made of cloth, paper or any other materials you choose.

You will be asked to stand on the scaffold and confess to your condemning fault in a 2minute presentation. At that time, you will wear your letter and discuss the information in your essay. This is NOT a time to simply read your essay. You actually need to create an outline (typed) for your presentation. That outline is part of your grade. You will also be scored on the creativity of your presentation!
